3 Ways to Succeed in your Next Job Interview

I have interviewed hundreds of entry level and intern candidates over the years, here are ways that always stood out to me when I was a hiring manager.

  1. Use the STAR method: I can't tell you the number of times I tried to follow along to an interview answer and it was so disorganized, I just could not.

    1. The STAR method is a way to easily organize your interview answers into a cohesive story. It stands for: Situation, Task, Action, Result. The action part of your answer should take up about 60% of your answer.

      1. Situation: How would you describe the situation to someone who wasn't there? Can you provide enough context as to why the situation arose?

      2. Task: What did you need to do in response to the situation?

      3. Action: What action did you take as a result of the situation and task at hand? The action you took will tie back to the quality at hand that you're trying to showcase (problem solving, adaptability, etc).

      4. Result: What did your action result in? This could include data points but it also could be that the team working on the project had better communication going forward, or that you got feedback and made changes in your approach going forward.

  2. Send a (CUSTOMIZED!) thank you email after an interview!

    1. It's rare for a candidate to send a thank you email so getting one as an interviewer is a sure fire way for you to stand out. HOWEVER, always make sure it ties back to the conversation you had with them and shows excitement about something you discussed. Receiving a generic thank you email is just as bad as not getting one at all, and now you're clogging up my inbox.

  3. Ask questions for which you actually want to know the answers!

    1. Do your research on the organization and who you're speaking with to be able to ask questions that are relevant to the person interviewing you AND help you decide whether or not you want to work there. As a hiring manager, I could tell if they were generic questions that didn't matter to this person. However, very strong questions could turn around an interview where I was maybe on the fence about the person

These are just some of the ways that you can stand out in an interview and what helped people stand out when I was a hiring manager.

3 Ways to Standout in this Job Market

The job market, especially for new grads, is tough right now. The recent grad unemployment rate is about 5.6% vs 4.2% for everyone combined. And people are even more worried about how AI will continue to impact that.

Let me give you some tips and tricks to stand out and overcome that worry.

  1. Get certified with certifications that make sense for your industry.

    1. And there are a TON of free certifications out there, for example:

      1. Amazon Ads Certifications: https://advertising.amazon.com/academy/certifications

      2. Google Ads Certification: https://skillshop.withgoogle.com/googleads/

    2. Study up on Excel, there's a lot of free resources out there too

  2. Get certified in AI specifically

    1. Claude: https://anthropic.skilljar.com/claude-101

    2. ChatGPT: https://academy.openai.com/

  3. Develop your professional skills

    1. Companies like Ernst & Young are more interested in hiring people with strong professional skills that can't be replaced by AI but rather can be leveraged in conjunction with AI that makes you more efficient.

      1. Skills such as: problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking, strategy development, communication, etc.

How to Standout as a New Hire in the World of AI

When starting out in a new job, you will be taught tasks and processes that might not necessarily be the most efficient. When you're onboarding, you have the opportunity to dig into AI to uncover ways to make processes more efficient.

For example, I had a new hire that needed to monitor ad spend for their campaigns on a weekly basis. They were taught to go into the ad console 3x a week to manually pull the spend numbers and add them to a spreadsheet. They realized what a drain on their time this was and instead built a skill in Claude to pull this data in for them to review and so all they had to do was make changes to the campaigns if they were not spending correctly. This saved them about 3-4 hours every week and then they shared it out with the broader team so it became impactful for more than just themself.

Mistakes to Avoid as a New Hire

At my last job, I developed and launch a 4-month pass/fail entry level training program. And while over 90% of people passed the program, we did have a few people fail, so they were let go within 4 months of starting. To note: These instances were part of a larger theme in their performance and not isolated one time occurrences.

  1. (Not) Communicating

    1. Being a no call, no show where people were trying to get ahold of this individual all day and had no idea if they were working or not. Turned out, they had an emergency that pulled them away from work. Emergencies happen but what they should have done? Let me (their manager) and their closest working peers know they would be unavailable that day. I, as their manager, could have stepped in to find coverage for their work. But instead, the work didn't get done and it caused a rift in trust (that had already been degrading)

  2. Not Taking Feedback

    1. One of the first things I would teach my entry-level trainees was how to write a strong professional email vs a 5 paragraph essay. I always encourage the use of bullets, highlighting, and bolding to help break up the text and make it easily scannable (because no one is reading an entire email).

      1. For example:

        Hi Sam,

I need to move the Q4 client report from Wed, Oct 8 to Fri, Oct 10.

        Here's the situation:

        • Cause: finance data arrived Oct 6, two days late

        • Impact: only the revenue slide is delayed

        • Plan: I'll send a draft of everything else by Wed EOD

Can you confirm Friday works for the client by Tue, 5 pm?

        Thanks, Alex

    2. However, I don't know if they were trying to be funny but I would get emails like this:

      1. Hi Sam, hope you're having a great week so I wanted to reach out about the Q4 client report because I know it's due on Wednesday but the finance data came in two days late which means that I have not been able to finish the revenue slide and I think I might need more time although the other sections are pretty much done and I was going to send a draft but I wasn't sure if that was okay so let me know what you think about Friday or whatever works and I can also hop on a call if that's easier because I know the client is expecting it soon so thanks and let me know, Alex

    3. They heard my feedback and thought they knew what it meant or how to apply it. This back and forth happened multiple times.

    4. Instead, when you get feedback, you should work to try to understand it from their POV. Ask questions to understand the why as that will help you determine how you should be applying it.

  3. Plagiarizing

    1. I had an individual who was so paralyzed in working in an ambiguous environment that they had a hard time understanding their learnings and knowing how to apply them. Rather than ask for help or try to dig in with me or their training buddy, they decided to straight up copy a presentation their training buddy had delivered (including the voice over or "talk track" that went along with the presentation) and tried to pass it off as their own. So when it came time to ask them questions about their content at the end of the presentation, they couldn't answer it because they didn't actually know the content.

    2. If you're having a hard time learning when onboarding into a new role, don't be afraid to speak up and get help. Asking for help is a million times better than pretending like you know and falling flat on your face.
